Mother-daughter quality time

Walking to Winslow, chatting with K. and spending an hour at Dancing Paint is my idea of a beautiful afternoon.  Along our way:

K. painted an English teapot (with English roses!), and I painted a mug. Absolutely delightful atmosphere in that place.

Weather of all kinds

Posted in chez C, flora and fauna at 12:11 pm by islandashley

The rain turned to snow about an hour ago.  Spring is fickle in the Sound!  I’d had thoughts of taking the kayak out, but the weather’s not exactly encouraging.

The daffodils don’t seem to mind a little wet snow:

Fiddle for a Friday night

Posted in miscellaneous Bainbridge, music at 9:16 pm by islandashley

Pegasus Coffee House here on B.I. filled up its charming space tonight with folks who came to listen to 15-yr-old Hank Veenstra play his fiddle.  He’s a talented kid, and a serious and focused performer. This was my first visit to Pegasus, and no surprise, I love it. Cozy (=small and warmish when packed) and host to a diverse audience (age range was all over, but probably averaged in the 40s).

Ordway science fair

Yesterday was the science fair for Ordway Elementary, and K’s entry was on electromagnetism.  She made a galvanometer and a great display board explaining her findings.  Great job, K!

Though the wind blows

Posted in beaches at 10:06 am by islandashley

…strange, strong and cold (if you’re a little one from AZ), Ashley and B. will take you to the shore and show you just how nice it really is! Al. hunkered down in the driftwood house, trying to keep warm, while S. ran around, deliriously happy in the face of the elements, lugging 50 lb driftwood logs to try and fill the cracks and keep her cousin warm.

What a day!

So this morning we went back across the water, this time with all the children.

Ivar’s for lunch, feeding the seagulls (of course!), the Aquarium, the Public Market.

Rainboots for A. and then the urchy-lurchy city bus back to the ferry dock.

And a momentary spot of sun and quiet for the Mama–rare but oh, so good!

St. Paddy in Seattle

With extended family in town, we’ve been enjoying a break from the daily routine.  Last night I (A), B, C, and D (how auspicious is that lineup of initials?!) jaunted into Seattle and found a fun place to visit on St. Patrick’s Day weekend:  Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub.

B. and D. really liked their corned beef and cabbage; we all really liked the live music and the energetic atmosphere!

Ralleyball tourney

We watched K. play in her (2 hour!) tennis tournament last night.  She’s come a long way and we were really impressed by her consistently good serves and her mean backhand.

The Bainbridge Athletic Club at Meadowmeer hosted the tournament among schools Ordway, Wilkes, Blakely, and Odyssey. At the end of the evening, Odyssey school took the trophy home, but the big applause really goes to all the volunteer coaches!

Cello lesson #12

My lesson this morning came after a couple of disruptions in the usual schedule, and I was a bit nervous about the lesson since I hadn’t practiced enough. (Memories of nerve-wracking piano lessons in my teens coming back to haunt me!) But C.F. was complimentary and encouraging, as always, and I had fun fumbling along and occasionally playing something decent-sounding. I learned more about Mozart’s composition techniques (very mathematical). We played a Mazas Sonatina duet that I straggled along with, and I’m working on numbers 5, 6, and 7 in the 3rd Suzuki book for the next two weeks. Then it’s on to Dvorak’s Humoresque, one of the last 3 pieces in the book!
