Those midnight munchies
A: Oh! I’m really craving melon and hashbrowns right now.
B: Huh. I’ve never heard of melanin hashbrowns.
A: They’re really well-browned.
Poems by 4th-grade K.
This was one of my favorite Christmas gifts. (I’ll provide captions)
Oh, dear! Oh, dear! I really should not be here!
The baby has begun to choke on a word he has not spoke!
Oh day so fair, Oh day so fair, that word shouldn’t be there!
I never want to lern
I never want to lern
I never want to lern,
lern lern how to spell lern!
Say hi to a fellow
Say hi to a foe
Say hi to your archenemy
Say…..OH NO!!!

The next best thing to Santa
When you’re four years old and Christmas is two days away…
It’s the Bainbridge Island Christmas Fire Truck!
We were having a cozy Sunday evening here at home when we heard some mighty loud carols coming down our street. We opened the door to see the bedecked fire engine cruising slowly past and all the neighbors spilling out onto their porches and driveways. The driver bellowed the horn a few times as he navigated the cul-de-sac turnaround, rolled slowly back past our house (while the kids cheered and waved furiously), and went on his merry way into the night.

Getting creative with the candy
Look what I made this afternoon:
I melted Jolly Ranchers on waxed paper (oven at 350 degrees). It takes 4-5 minutes for them to melt into little puddles. Once they had cooled enough to score and break into geometric shapes, I arranged the pieces on new sheets of waxed paper and melted them together, to make the walls and roof.
I set the candy house over a tea light and we ooh and ahhed, until:
“You forgot to make a chimney, Mama!” my smart little cookies yelled as the roof began to melt.
Winter Eyes
S’s 2nd grade class had a poetry reading last Friday–here is the poem she read with great poise.
The poem, which I like a lot, is by Douglas Florian.

Pacific Madrone trees
These are some of my favorite trees in the world, and on my walks I regularly pass beautiful specimens. I get to see them peeling into all sorts of amazing colors, smooth and rough at the same time, each one in a different stage of shedding. Here’s a stand I passed today on Sportsman Club Road:

Pictures of Poulsbo
Downtown Poulsbo is a charming place to shop or drive through on your way elsewhere, as I did today. Front Street curves along Liberty Bay, all spruced up for the holidays and all the shops and galleries looking happily busy.
This path in the woods is off Lindvig Way.

Sent a gift, received a gift
I had a Christmas package to mail this morning, and by the time I got to the post office, the line was out the door. Luckily, Winslow’s P.O. lobby has an automatic postal kiosk, a do-it-yourself station that weighs your package, takes your credit card, and spits out a mailing label!
There were only two people in line for this grand invention.
So, after only a few minutes, I had my package all weighed, measured, and labeled for its journey to AZ. You can bet there was a twinkle in my eye as I walked past the line and out the door, thinking, I just got an extra hour in my day.
